The collective founded by NFT collectors will this Tuesday present a catalog of the 100 artists who will follow in the NFT.
Founded by JessyJeanne and Annelise Stern, the collective Gxrls Revolution will unveil its first 100-artist catalog at the end of the day, which will follow at NFT. “We have often been told that there are almost no female artists in the NFTs. That’s wrong. This catalog is proof of that,” they explain. Joséphine Louis, Léa Duhem and Marie-Odile Falais also contributed to the publication of this catalogue.
“They knew nothing or very little”
“When we asked people working in NFTs about the lack of female artists in their curations, events, collections and articles, their answers were unanimous: they knew nothing or very little. ‘Put content where it’s missing,’ they say.
As a reminder, an NFT (“non-fungible token”) is a digital title issued by a blockchain (primarily Ethereum) and linked to a digital asset (photo, video, etc.). Each NFT is unique and cannot be reproduced. NFTs are used in art, in the luxury sector or for trading cards in sports.
Only 24% women
Founded in March, Gxrls Revolution also studied the proportion of female speakers at web3 events held in France in 2022, from Binance Blockchain Week to the Metaverse Summit or NFT Paris. The result is clear: of 789 speakers, only 192 were women or 24%.
“The idea is to show a baseline trend rather than imposing a number with certainty,” states the collective. However, this percentage is “low” when we know that 40% of cryptocurrency investors in France are women.
“It’s even lower when we know that they make up 52% of the French population and that web3 is meant to be a revolution that will impact the lives of all of us for years to come,” explains Annelise Stern.
The collective regrets that female artists in NFTs are still less visible today. “But these women are there. They are artists, investors, developers, entrepreneurs… Getting them more involved is both a potential barrier to your career and a great way to bring other women on board with this ecosystem. The circle is virtuous, so why renounce it? There are many initiatives that highlight and seek out these experts, web3 events is very interested in working hand in hand with them,” says Annelise Stern. Also, the NFT Factory, which opened its doors a few weeks ago in Paris, has only 24 Women of 128 co-founders reveals the collective.
The gender issue
Through these various releases, Gxrls Revolution is questioning the issue of gender within the Web 3 ecosystem. A few weeks ago, BFM Crypto released a survey on women in Web 3.
“If the topic is so uninteresting, why did it trigger this wave of reactions?” asks the collective. “Yes, it is possible to pretend to be a man on Twitter or never communicate about your gender. However, let’s remember that the Web3 ecosystem is not limited to Twitter Revolution.
“Are we gender biased or are we gender biased? How many times have we been asked to accompany someone when we go to a web3 event? The majority of women around us admit that they feel less serious because of their gender to be taken.” (especially when their gender combines at a young age),” states the collective.
